Buying guide - DIN sizes and dash fitment
Single DIN is 180 x 50 mm of front panel. Double DIN is 180 x 100 mm. That's the whole standard, and it's why so many people buy the right size and still end up in the driveway with a cutting wheel in hand. Get those two numbers right and you're halfway there; get the depth wrong and no amount of force will save you. Depth is the trap.
DIN stands for Deutsches Institut fur Normung, the German body that wrote the car radio size down as DIN 75490. It became ISO 7736 in 1984, and it's the reason a radio from one car can be dropped into another. The standard fixes the front panel and the aperture around it: 180 mm wide, 50 mm or 100 mm tall. That's all it is - a mechanical contract between your dashboard and the box you're about to buy.
Now notice what it doesn't do. It doesn't grade quality, so a single DIN unit isn't a cheaper radio, it's a shorter one, and plenty of expensive single DIN decks sound better than a cheap double DIN screen. It also says nothing about depth, which is the one number that turns a simple swap into an afternoon you'd rather forget.
Worth saying out loud: the standard is four decades old, and cars haven't got any simpler since. Treat 180 x 50 mm as a starting point, never as a promise.
Every dashboard falls into one of three heights, and all three are 180 mm wide. Height is the only number you need.

So the 1.5 DIN slot is the awkward middle child, and a frustrating one to shop for. Too tall for a single DIN unit to look right, too short for a double DIN unit unless you cut, which is why we'd budget for a fascia or a trim kit from the start rather than hoping. And a handful of kei cars and vans ignore the DIN numbers completely, so if your opening doesn't measure 180 mm across, send us a photo instead of a model name.
The taller face buys vertical room. That really is the entire difference, and most of what people repeat about these two sizes is just noise you can safely ignore.

Read the power row twice, because that's where the money goes missing. Taller does not mean louder. Does a double DIN unit give you a stronger amplifier? No. It's the same class of component in both sizes, and your speakers plus your amplifier decide how loud and how clean it gets. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you a screen, not sound.
Five minutes with a tape measure settles the whole question. Pick two of these three checks and you'll know what you're dealing with. No spec sheet and no seller can guess your aperture from a model name, so let the tape measure win.
Then take the photo. Lay a ruler against the open aperture and shoot it straight on, in daylight, with the whole opening in frame. We ask for that picture on every order, and it saves you more back and forth than any amount of email ever will.
DIN fixes the face and says nothing about depth, and that gap has been ruining weekends for decades: the panel measures a perfect 180 x 50 mm, while the cavity behind it is too shallow for anything aftermarket. This is the part that makes people furious, because nothing in the product listing warned you.
A modern Android head unit isn't a radio with a screen glued on. So what's actually back there? A harness, GPS and Wi-Fi antenna leads, a 4G antenna and SIM slot on connected builds, RCA cables for a reversing camera, and usually an amplifier control wire. Shine a torch into the cavity at an angle, look for the heater duct and the glovebox hinge, and measure to the first thing in the way. Tell us the number even when it looks generous, because your dashboard won't move to make room.
The aperture decides the chassis. It doesn't have to decide the screen. So how do you get a 9-inch display into a 50 mm slot? You move the screen, not the dashboard.
On a conventional design the screen lives inside the face, so a 50 mm slot holds a 50 mm display and nothing bigger, ever. Mount the screen in front of a slim body instead, and the chassis stays single DIN while the display runs far larger than the slot. That's how a car with a 50 mm aperture ends up with a 9-inch Android screen and wireless CarPlay, with the dashboard still uncut.

Two things aren't settled by the DIN numbers you measured: steering wheel button control, and whether a factory amplifier needs its own adapter or decoder. Both are confirmed per vehicle, because one model year can leave the factory with different sound systems depending on the market.
If your aperture is 100 mm tall, take the double DIN route. It fits without drama and it looks like it belongs there. If it's only 50 mm and you want a big screen, I'd take a single DIN style body with a floating or removable screen and leave the dashboard alone. Cutting a modern console for 50 mm of extra height is a permanent decision on a part you can't easily replace, and we'd rather sell you the body that fits than the one that nearly does.
